This study analyzed how two major U.S. Spanish-language national television networks covered the topic of immigration during two simultaneous events: a global health pandemic crisis, COVID-19, and the 2020 U.S. presidential election. This investigation centered on the intermedia agenda setting effect between Telemundo and Univision. Outcomes indicate that Telemundo televised a higher number of immigration news stories than Univision. The intermedia agenda setting effect showed a moderate positive correlation between networks, demonstrating that their immigration news attributes were similar, but not quite the same. Results indicate that Telemundo’s and Univision’s viewers were receiving different information about immigration. The cross-lagged correlation established that the directional flow of influence between networks was reciprocal, suggesting that both newscasts were impacting each other’s immigration coverage, but the dominant flow of news influence was from Univision to Telemundo. This investigation documented that the intermedia agenda setting effect of a single issue and its descriptive attributes can be measured under a presidential election environment.
